Health Promotion

The following Health Promotion activities are available free of charge to older persons living independently in Auckland. Dates and venues will be arranged throughout the year as funding becomes available. A gold coin donation will be gratefully received to help cover the cost of refreshments that will be provided at seminars and workshops.

Advance Care Planning

Advance Care Planning is a way to help you think about, talk about and share your thoughts and wishes about your future health care. Now is the best time to consider taking part in Advance Care planning conversations before a possible serious illness. Planning will help you and those around you understand what is important to you and what treatment and care you would like. Join us at our seminar where our expert guest speaker will help you understand what an Advance Care Plan is and how to set one up.

All about Funerals

This two hour seminar is designed to empower and educate about the practical and legal issues that need to be considered when a bereavement occurs. Learn from our expert guest speaker all about planning for a Funeral and all the options and choices that are available in Auckland. 


Cancer Society

At this two hour seminar, a team from the Cancer Society will cover the following: screening; prevention and early detection. They will also talk about the range of support services they have available.

Enduring Power of Attorney and Wills

Who will manage your affairs if you are no longer able to? Are you aware of the importance of having a Will and Enduring Powers of Attorney in place? Come along to this two hour seminar and find out from our expert guest speaker about Enduring Powers of Attorney and learn about what you need to think about to create and/or review a Will.


Glaucoma

Come and learn all about Glaucoma: how it is treated; how it impacts those living with it and what you can do to minimise the risk of blindness from Glaucoma. Often there are no symptoms to make you aware you are losing your sight. Attending this two hour seminar could save your sight or that of someone you love.

Fire Safety

Sadly, every year people lose their lives in house fires, however, there are simple actions you can take to prevent a fire in your home, ensure you have early warning of a fire and a plan of how to escape quickly. Join us at this seminar to learn more from Fire and Emergency NZ about fire safety and how to be fire safe in your home, including information and advice about specialised smoke alarm alerting equipment that is available for those who are Deaf or hard of hearing, and other hearing support available through Your Way/Kia Roha.


Heart Health

At this two hour seminar, a Heart Health Advocate from the Heart Foundation will cover the following: How the heart works; sign and symptoms of a heart attack; what to do in an emergency, risk factors; heart healthy choices & pulse awareness.

Improving Nutrition for Healthy Ageing  

A one hour presentation that will provide an overview of the importance of nutrition as we age and our changing nutritional needs. Includes a look at food groups, their importance and recommended daily intake, the importance of protein, fibre, fluids, strong bones, Vitamin D and smart snacking.


Improving Sleep 

This two and a half hour workshop is designed for those who suffer from not having enough sleep and/or good quality sleep. We will explore the structure of sleep and its impact on our health and you will be provided with positive strategies and suggestions for improving your hours of quality sleep.   

Independent Living Services

Having trouble opening jars, getting out of cars and picking things up off the floor? ‘Independent Living Services’ has a mission to make daily living easier, so you can live your life, your way. Find out from our expert guest speaker at this two hour seminar about how to access support groups and health resources in your area. Will include demonstrations of the latest mobility equipment and products to help you with everyday tasks and can provide height and safety checks of your walker or walking stick.


Introduction to Mindfulness

This two and a half hour workshop will introduce you to the practice of Mindfulness. Research suggests that when we intentionally practise being mindful, we feel less stressed, anxious and depressed, and become more balanced and in tune with what is happening inside and outside of our bodies. The resulting calm and clarity boosts wellbeing, broadens perspective and provides an important foundation for learning.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in New Zealand, affecting 1 in 7 people over the age of 50. Come along to this two hour seminar and learn from our expert guest speaker about this age-related eye disease; how to reduce your risk, the latest treatments and the supports available for those with the disease.


Staying Safe Refresher for Senior Drivers

A three hour classroom-based refresher workshop for Senior drivers.  Using information and resources provided by Waka Kotahi (New Zealand Transport Agency), the workshop aims to fine tune your safe driving knowledge, increase your knowledge of road code changes and outline other transport options available to help Seniors remain mobile. The session is relaxed and informative and you will not be tested.


Steady As You Go©

This is a community based, weekly falls prevention exercise class and is an ACC approved Community Strength and Balance programme. Following initial extensive instruction from Age Concern Auckland Health Promotion staff, each new class continues with support from volunteer peer leaders within the class, together with continued support and supervision from Age Concern Auckland. Classes run for an hour in total at various community venues and all attendees are encouraged to work at their own pace. Participants begin with seated warm up exercises followed by standing balance exercises, strengthening exercises, walking balance exercises and end with seated balance and warm down exercises.


Steady Steps

A one hour presentation that will introduce facts about slips, trips and falls, their likely causes and provides information on easy strategies to reduce the risk of falling – thereby helping you to maintain your independence.

Scam Alert!

A one hour presentation designed to educate and empower older people on a range of different scams - with tips and strategies provided on how to avoid them.

Stroke Awareness

At this two hour seminar, come and learn from the Stroke Foundation all about the signs and symptoms of a Stroke, how to reduce your Stroke risk and what services are available to support you.

Technology For Seniors

At this two hour seminar, come and learn from the Stroke Foundation all about the signs and symptoms of a Stroke, how to reduce your Stroke risk and what services are available to support you.

Steady Steps + Improving Nutrition for Healthy Ageing + Improving Sleep + Scam Alert Presentations are also available to Seniors Groups who have a guest speaking slot or to residents at Retirement Villages.
